IATA chief tracks recovery path

SINGAPORE, 20 February 2024: The global airline performance during 2023 reached 94% of pre-pandemic 2019 levels driven partly by a strong performance in domestic markets, almost 4% ahead of 2019, with international markets achieving 88% of full recovery, International Air Transport Association director general Willie Walsh told the Changi Aviation Summit in Singapore on Monday.

“If we look at the Asia Pacific, the situation was slightly less than that, overall at 86% of where the region was in 2019. The strong performance in domestic markets is over 2% ahead, but international travel in the region still lagged at about 73% of the 2019 level. It is important to point out that there was a strong recovery as we went through the year, moving from about 57% in January to almost 83% in December.”

Looking forward, IATA estimates that over the next 20 years, the industry will grow at about 3.3% annually.

“That is significantly lower than the growth we witnessed during 2010 to 2019. But I think it reflects some of the challenges that we as an industry will face going into the future. Infrastructure constraints both in the air and on the ground. Supply chain issues have been a feature of the industry for several years and will likely continue for a few more years. The delay and delivery of new aircraft, the problems in relation to engines, labour shortages in some parts of the world, and significantly the cost impact of our transition to net zero in 2050,” said Walsh.

“Because whatever way you look at this, a cost will be associated with transitioning to net zero. And ultimately, those costs will have to be reflected in the ticket prices we charge our customers, dampening the growth level the industry sees going forward.”

Walsh identified some of the challenges airlines face, focusing on the environment. He noted that the industry was committed to achieving net zero CO2 by the 2050 deadline.

“We cannot fail or falter in our efforts to achieve that goal. We must work together to ensure that we can credibly provide people with confidence that we have a pathway to decarbonise our industry. And I think we can take a lot of confidence from what we’ve achieved already.

“If you compare the CO2 produced by the industry in 2000 and compare that to what we did in 2019, just before the pandemic, our CO2 footprint increased by almost 54%. But during that same period, passenger traffic grew by 175%. So, there is a complete disconnect between passenger growth and our C02 growth.

“We know that we can be confident that with the measures we’ve put in place, with the advances in new technology, there are opportunities for us to address this critical issue,” the IATA chief told the summit audience.

Emirates serves rich yoghurt from Killowen Farm, a single-origin dairy yoghurt producer on routes from Ireland.

Even snacks onboard Emirates are elevated and thoughtfully selected. SINGAPORE, 19 February 2024: Holland America Line is elevating its Alaska Cruisetours in time for the 2024 season with room upgrades at McKinley Chalet Resort and a new, included tour in Dawson City, Yukon.

Alaska Cruisetours combine an Alaska cruise with an overland tour to Denali, and Holland America Line is the only cruise line that extends those tours to the Yukon.

Balconies will be added to 28 river-view rooms and upgraded to the Denali Suite category for guests joining the ‘Klondike Gold Tour’ tour that explores the Klondike Gold Rush history.

In addition, a new deluxe category of non-balcony rooms with suite amenities is being introduced. For the excursions, guests on select Denali and Yukon Cruisetours will have a new “Klondike Gold Tour” that expands on the region’s famed gold rush experience. The tour visits the original discovery claim site that launched the gold rush and Gold Dredge 4.

The property will now offer 84 Denali Suites — giving more guests stunning balcony views of Denali National Park or the Nenana River. Holland America Line will also upgrade 45 non-balcony rooms to feature all the suite amenities, creating a new Deluxe room category.

The new Klondike Gold Tour is complimentary for all guests on select Alaska Denali and Yukon Cruisetours, including Dawson City. Guests will visit the Discovery Claim National Historic Site that started the Klondike Gold Rush and enjoy time at Gold Dredge 4, a preserved wooden-hulled dredge once used to mine gold in the Klondike River Valley. A Parks Canada guide shares the history of gold dredging in the area and about the first discovery of gold in the Yukon.

Guests can delve deeper into the Klondike Gold Rush on an Alaska cruise or Cruisetour on additional shore excursions in Skagway, including visiting the Gold Rush Training Camp and panning for gold, taking the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad to Liarsville Gold Camp, and visiting the Gold Rush Cemetery and Historic Skagway Inn (the largest brothel in Skagway during the gold rush era).

Holland America Line is the only cruise line to offer an Alaska cruise combined with an overland tour to Denali and the Yukon.

Yukon and Denali Cruisetours range from nine to 18 days and include either a three- or four-day Inside Passage cruise on Koningsdam or Zaandam, or a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam or Noordam; a two-or three-night stay at Denali; a journey into the Yukon and additional city visits.

BORACAY, Philippines, 19 February 2024: Boracay remains AirAsia Philippines’ fast-moving getaway destination for individual and group travellers prevailing over Bohol, Cebu, and Puerto Princesa.

Latest AirAsia data shows that 250,000 passengers have planned and booked their flights to the island from February to May. This is already 72% of last year’s 377,000 passengers flown to the island. The increasing figure is expected to contribute to Boracay’s economy, especially since the Department of Tourism and the Local Government of Aklan expect over 2.3 million tourists to visit the island this year.

“Boracay is in the top three in our most visited domestic destinations. It is not just the summer when we see an influx of guests flying to Boracay; it is all year round. During the pandemic, this island was a haven for remote work set-up. Now, the island has regained its fame for short and long vacations”, said AirAsia head of communications and Public Affairs and First Officer Steve Dailisan shares.

To provide more convenience, especially for guests who are planning to extend their vacation on the paradise island, the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline’s travel partner – TravelOnlinePH, officially opened its Travel & Service Center right on the epicentre of Boracay to cater to tourists who would like to either have their tickets rebooked or book other flights elsewhere, find cheap hotels, activities, and other travel offerings, with the assistance of dedicated travel experts.

“Guests fly to the island to unwind and spend their holiday and we intend to always make their flight booking concerns hassle-free. TravelOnlinePH has always been a reliable offline partner, and we extend our warmest congratulations as they achieve this milestone,” Dailisan added.

New flight links Ashgabat and KL

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 February 2024: Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airports Holdings welcomed the inaugural flight of Turkmenistan Airlines from Ashgabat to Kuala Lumpur 15 February.

Introducing a direct flight from Central Asia to Kuala Lumpur marks an important milestone following last year’s introduction of flights from Ashgabat to Bangkok. Also, in January 2024, Turkmenistan Airlines confirmed Milan, Ho Chi Minh City, Jeddah and Kuala Lumpur as its new destinations scheduled during Q1, 2024.

The first Turkmenistan Airlines Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with 368 seats in a three-class configuration entered service in December 2023, serving the Ashgabat-Bangkok route.

Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing and Ambassador of Turkmenistan in Malaysia, Muhammetnyyaz Mashalov, along with representatives from Turkmenistan Airlines, welcomed the 228 passengers who arrived on the KUL inaugural flight.

The airline deploys a mix of Boeing 777-200LR and 777-300ER aircraft to serve the twice-weekly scheduled services configured with 289 and 368 seats, respectively.

Since 15 February, twice weekly flights will depart from Ashgabat every Wednesday and Thursday, boosting tourist arrivals from Central Asia and Russia and facilitating seamless travel between regions. The flight time from Ashgabat to Kuala Lumpur is eight hours and 10 minutes.

Tourism Malaysia is pursuing strategic collaborations with international airlines, aiming to stimulate increased travel demand from Central Asia that aligns with Malaysia’s target of reaching 35.6 million tourists during Visit Malaysia Year 2026. From January to November 2023, Malaysia experienced a notable surge in tourism from Central Asia, welcoming 21,910 tourists, reflecting a remarkable 196.7% increase compared to 2022.

Concurrently, arrivals from Russia also soared, with Malaysia hosting 100,645 Russian visitors during the same period. This represents a staggering 360% surge from 2022 and a 39.5% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Meanwhile, on 16 February, the airline introduced a new flight from Ashgabat to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, flying a Boeing 777-200 LR. Also, on its website, the airline promotes through a homepage banner top-of-page services to Bangkok, Thailand; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, flagging them as relatively new additions to its network.

When you click on the Kuala Lumpur tab on the airline’s home page, it provides details of representatives handling bookings. In the case of the route to Kuala Lumpur, it points to the following contacts.

Sri Lanka likely to extend visa-free stays

MUMBAI, 19 February 2024: Sri Lanka’s Minister of Tourism and Lands, Sports, and Youth Affairs Harin Fernando says he is hopeful visa-free travel for seven nationalities will be extended beyond 31 March.

“Hopefully, it can be extended… I’ve got the figures on what we earn from the USD20 tourist visa and what we earn from a tourist’s visit… If the trigger is achieving an increase in tourism revenue, then relaxing visas is the way to go.”

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Tourism and Lands, Sports, and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando, speaking at the Sri Lanka Networking Evening event at OTM Mumbai

He was commenting on visa-free travel during a panel discussion held on the sidelines of the recent OTM travel show, held in Mumbai, India.

Under an immigration bureau concession, nationals from seven countries can visit Sri Lanka visa-free until 31 March 2024. Nationals from  China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan are granted visa-free entry following a cabinet decision that launched the pilot programme on 24 October 2023 to revitalise the tourism industry.

Travellers can stay up to 30 days with the option of a double entry from the initial entry date. The only requirement is to log online to get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Sri Lanka.

In a speech presented at the OTM’s Sri Lanka Networking Evening event, the minister confirmed the country’s tourist arrivals are recovering, with January recording 208,253 visitors, an increase of 106% compared to January 2023. He added that during the first six days of February, tourist arrivals reached 48,000. January’s top 10 source markets are India, Russia, the UK, Germany, China, France, Poland, Australia, the US and the Netherlands.

The minister noted that 9,000 tourists a day arrive at Colombo’s international airports… flights are full, and the target for 2024 is 2.5 million international tourists. In 2023, the country targeted 1.5 million visitors and closed the year with 1.439 million or around 11,000 arrivals short of its goal.

Travel capacity outshines 2018-2019 levels

SINGAPORE, 19 February 2023: Travel content supplied to corporate and leisure clients combined is set to surpass the annual travel capacity in 2018 and 2019, according to FCM Consulting’s Q4-2023* Quarterly Global Trends Report, citing data from Cirium.

The report also highlighted a key trend set to continue for 2024 — more seats with fewer flights. H1-2024 is forecast to offer more seats +97.9 million (+3.5%) and -2.1 million (-5.6%) fewer flights than H1-2019.

Airline capacity and fares

“This results from fleet configuration changes and schedule shifts to meet the demand. When carefully planned, this will be favourable to airline operating costs, staffing, airport slots and airport costs,” said FCM Travel general manager Southeast Asia Kenji Soh.

“Q4-2023 closed a milestone year, seeing corporate travel the busiest and least interrupted in over four years. Business travellers became more confident than in previous years and are planning trips in 2024 to both grow their business and connect with clients and colleagues,” Soh noted.

“Across the top global corporate airlines, we forecast that the seats offered in 2024 will be two per cent above 2019 and the number of flights offered will be down 6%.”

“American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, LATAM Airlines Group, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic Airways are all forecast to be back over 100% in terms of seats offered when compared to five years ago.”

Airlines in the home markets of China and India lead Asia’s growth. The top Chinese airlines are forecasted to offer 21% more seats in 2024 than in 2019.

“Singapore to Vancouver saw the highest increase in business class airfares, which increased by 216%. Singapore to Da Lian saw a 212% increase in business class fares as it is a popular destination amongst business travellers for being one of Northeast Asia’s most important financial, shipping and logistics centres. The top five destinations from Singapore were Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Shanghai and Hong Kong in Q4-2023,” added Soh.

Accommodation

Regarding accommodation, the average room rates increased across all regions for 2023, compared to 2022, with Asia seeing a rise of USD39, the highest globally.

In Q4-2023, Singapore commanded the highest average room rate paid by corporate travellers per night at USD296, followed by Hanoi at USD$201, Bangkok at USD184, Manila at USD174, Jakarta at USD155, and Kuala Lumpur at USD145.

“Kuala Lumpur witnessed the sharpest increase of 38% in Q4-2023 as compared to Q3-2023, followed by Singapore at 11%. Jakarta was up by just 1%, and Manila remained flat,” concluded Soh.

Despite the increased cost, all regions also saw a lift in occupancy levels year-on-year, with Mainland China – the last major nation to reopen its borders – leaping 34% to have an occupancy rate of 65%. Asia, excluding China, saw an increase of 17%. India saw an increase of 1.8% to 70% in occupancy levels in 2023.
