UNESCO recognises nine Asian sites

SINGAPORE, 2 October 2023: The 45th session of the World Heritage Committee concluded last week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, inscribing 42 new sites and approving the extension of five sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Of the 42 new sites, 33 are cultural and nine are natural. According to the UNESCO media statement, the new sites will benefit from the highest level of heritage protection. They will also have access to new opportunities for technical and financial assistance from UNESCO. There are 1,199 UNESCO World Heritage sites in 168 countries. During the two weeks of deliberation, the World Heritage Committee also approved the extension of five sites and examined the state of conservation of 263 sites already inscribed.

World Heritage in Danger

During this session, two Ukrainian sites were inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to threats linked to shelling. “Saint Sophia’s Cathedral and complex of monastic and Lavra buildings in Kyiv-Pechersk” and “the ensemble of the historic centre in Lviv” join the “Historic Centre of Odesa”, which was inscribed on the list in January 2023 for the same reason.

Nine sites honoured in Asia

Cambodia – Koh Ker: Archaeological Site of Ancient Lingapura or Chok Gargyar

The archaeological site of Koh Ker is a sacred urban ensemble of numerous temples and sanctuaries, including sculptures, inscriptions, wall paintings, and archaeological remains. Constructed over a twenty-three-year period, it was one of two rival Khmer Empire capitals – the other being Angkor – and was the sole capital from 928 to 944 CE. Established by King Jayavarman IV, his sacred city was believed to be laid out based on ancient Indian religious concepts of the universe. The new city demonstrated unconventional city planning, artistic expression and construction technology, especially using very large monolithic stone blocks.

Located on Jingmai Mountain in southwestern China, this cultural landscape was developed over a thousand years by the Blang and Dai peoples following practices that began in the 10th century. The property is a tea production area comprised of traditional villages within old tea groves surrounded by forests and tea plantations. The traditional understorey cultivation of old tea trees is a method that responds to the specific conditions of the mountain’s ecosystem and subtropical monsoon climate, combined with a governance system maintained by the local Indigenous communities.

India – Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas:

This serial property encompasses the three most representative examples of Hoysala-style temple complexes in southern India, dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. The Hoysala style was created through a careful selection of contemporary temple features and those from the past to create a different identity from neighbouring kingdoms.

The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas are located in three places in two districts of Karnataka, (Wikipedia).

India – Santiniketan:

Established in rural West Bengal in 1901 by the renowned poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, Santiniketan was a residential school and centre for art based on ancient Indian traditions and a vision of the unity of humanity transcending religious and cultural boundaries. A ‘world university’ was established at Santiniketan in 1921, recognising the unity of humanity or “Visva Bharati”. Distinct from the prevailing British colonial architectural orientations of the early 20th century and of European modernism, Santiniketan represents approaches toward pan-Asian modernity, drawing on ancient, medieval and folk traditions from across the region.

Shantiniketan is a neighbourhood of Bolpur town in the Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in West Bengal, India, approximately 152 km north of Kolkata. Shantiniketan is situated at 23.68°N 87.68°E (Wikipedia)

Indonesia – The Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and its Historic Landmarks:

The central axis of Yogyakarta was established in the 18th century by Sultan Mangkubumi and has continued from that time as a centre of government and Javanese cultural traditions. The six-kilometre north-south axis is positioned to link Mount Merapi and the Indian Ocean, with the Kraton (palace) at its centre and key cultural monuments lining the axis to the north and south that are connected through rituals. It embodies key beliefs about the cosmos in Javanese culture, including the marking of the cycles of life.

Mongolia – Deer Stone Monuments and Related Sites of Bronze Age:

Located on the slopes of the Khangai Ridge in central Mongolia, these deer stones were used for ceremonial and funerary practices. Dating from about 1200 to 600 BCE, they stand up to four metres tall and are set directly in the ground as single standing stones or in groups, and are almost always located in complexes that include large burial mounds called khirgisüürs and sacrificial altars. Covered with highly stylised or representational engravings of stags, deer stones are the most important surviving structures belonging to the culture of Eurasian Bronze Age nomads that evolved and then slowly disappeared between the 2nd and 1st millennia BCE.

Republic of Korea – Gaya Tumuli:

This serial property includes archaeological cemetery sites with burial mounds attributed to the Gaya Confederacy, which developed in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula from the 1st to the 6th century CE. Through their geographical distribution and landscape characteristics, types of burials, and grave goods, the cemeteries attest to the distinctive Gaya political system in which polities existed as autonomous political equals while sharing cultural commonalities. The introduction of new forms of tombs and the intensification of the spatial hierarchy in the tumuli sites reflect the structural changes experienced by Gaya society during its history.

Will Thais travel more or less?

BANGKOK, 29 September 2023: SiteMinder, a leading open hotel commerce platform, has released the 2023 edition of the world’s largest consumer research on accommodation, which reveals that 88% of Thai travellers intend to travel at least the same amount as they did over the past year, including one in two (53%) who intend to travel more.

Additionally, the number planning to travel only internationally has nearly doubled, from 26% last year to 49% this year.

The findings are in SiteMinder’s Changing Traveller Report 2023, an analysis of more than 10,000 travellers surveyed across Thailand and 11 other countries. They form part of the four key characteristics underpinning the travel plans and motivations that will impact the global accommodation industry over the coming year.

Four key takeaways

The enduring explorer: Committed to travelling, regardless of living costs.

The digital dependent: Reliant on new technologies and bound to devices.

The memory maker: Investing in experiences in a roaring ‘20s rerun.

The conscious collaborator: An open ally to accommodation and the community.

When it comes to accommodation, despite inflation, 96% of Thai travellers globally say they are happy to spend money beyond the cost of their room. The finding is unsurprising given that almost nine in 10 local travellers say that what they need from their accommodation has changed in the last year. A ‘comfortable/inspiring work environment’ is what Thai travellers today want most – a finding that correlates to 57% intending to work during their next trip. While that figure has dropped marginally from 65% last year, Thai travellers are the second most likely to work on their next trip, behind only Indian travellers.

At a global level, accommodation is being sought out as a destination unto itself, with one in two travellers—notably international travellers—looking to spend either ‘most of the time’ or ‘considerable time’ at their accommodation on their next trip. At 77%, this trend is even higher among Thais.

SiteMinder’s regional vice president of Asia, Bradley Haines, says the research affirms the health of Thailand’s travel sector and the critical role played by accommodation providers.

“Contrary to recent years, we are seeing a stronger intent among Thai travellers to travel internationally only and spend money, even amid inflationary pressures,” says Haines. “Additionally, we are seeing accommodation providers play a more pivotal role than ever before. For 77% of local travellers, the accommodation will serve as the destination.”

While almost 77% of Thai travellers will be tolerant of accommodation providers having lower service standards in light of staff shortages, a fundamental finding from SiteMinder’s Changing Traveller Report 2023 is that the accommodation sector is perceived to be lagging other industries from a technology standpoint. Over 60% of locals think the accommodation industry is either average or behind in technology adoption, while a remarkable 95% agree that their booking experience and stay could be better if accommodation businesses were more tech-savvy.

SiteMinder’s research has found that technology use among travellers includes:

  • AI – more than half of travellers globally, including more than two-thirds of millennials, are either likely or very likely to use AI to generate accommodation recommendations. Thai travellers are even more receptive, with 86% likely to use AI to generate accommodation recommendations.
  • Social media – 70% of travellers globally, including 9-in-10 Generation Zers, say social media influences how they discover their accommodation. In Thailand, social media’s influence is even stronger at 25% above the global average, putting Thai travellers second only to Indonesian travellers when it comes to being influenced by social media during the accommodation discovery process.
  • Booking websites – while four in five travellers will book their accommodation online, three in five say they have not proceeded with their booking because of a bad experience. Difficult processes and websites that don’t feel secure are the top two contributors to a bad experience.

“Today’s Thai traveller is enduring, extremely digitally-dependent and conscious, with a strong desire to create memories for as long as the privilege of travelling remains available. Through our research, we now know that they perceive the accommodation industry as being behind when it comes to technology adoption, and accommodation providers should see this as an invitation to invest in modern commerce technology that allows them to best cater for current customer needs and expectations,” says Haines.

Brunei’s GallopAir orders China’s C919

SINGAPORE, 28 September 2023: Brunei-based airline GallopAir has signed a deal to buy 30 aircraft from the Chinese aircraft manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), which includes the first overseas order of China’s domestically developed C919 passenger aircraft.

The deal was disclosed by China-based Shaanxi Tianju Investment Group, an investor in GallopAir, in a WeChat post on 18 September and reported in Global Times, a China state-controlled media.

According to Shaanxi Tianju Investment Group, the order – signed on 15 September on the sidelines of the China-ASEAN Expo will make GallopAir the world’s first overseas airline to fly the  C919 passenger aircraft. Founded with investment from China, the airline plans to commence commercial flights during the third quarter of 2023.

Based in Brunei, GallopAir will complement to Royal Brunei Airlines as the second flag carrier in Brunei. It will make up for the transport capacity of Royal Brunei Airlines and build a Southeast Asian air transport hub, according to the Shaanxi Tianju Investment Group media statement issued on the sidelines of last week’s 20th China-ASEAN Expo hosted in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi region.

GallopAir elaborated on the objectives in a Facebook post earlier this week.
“We’re on a mission to make Brunei a pivotal aviation hub for regional passenger consolidation. With our fleet of COMAC aircraft, we’re set to enhance regional connectivity, offering direct flights connecting Brunei to cities in Southeast Asia, North Asia, and the Southwest Pacific.”

The airline’s executive team is headed by chief executive officer Cham Chi from China and adviser SP Tan from Singapore.

The C919 completed its inaugural commercial flight from Shanghai to Beijing on 28 May, flown by launch customer China Eastern Airlines.

It is China’s first self-developed large jet airliner and an important demonstration of China’s strength in self-innovation in the high-end manufacturing industry, Global Times reported.

The COMAC C919 project gained headlines as a potential competitor of Airbus A320 family and Boeing B737 family aircraft, the dominant aircraft in domestic use in China.

The single-aisle aircraft is produced by Chinese aircraft manufacturer Comac and Powered by CFM International LEAP -1C engines.
