Free Singapore Tour is back

SINGAPORE, 5 April 2023: Changi Airport Group, Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) re-launched the Free Singapore Tour on Monday after a three-year hiatus due to Covid-19.

Three existing tours available since pre-Covid-19 – the City Sights Tour, Heritage Tour and Jewel Tour – have been refreshed to include new points of interest.

Plus, a brand-new Changi Precinct Tour introduces travellers to the sights and sounds of the eastern region surrounding Singapore Changi Airport. Each tour lasts 2.5 hours and will be available daily, with plans to progressively increase to nine daily tours.

With transit and transfer passengers accounting for about 30% of passenger traffic at Changi airport pre-pandemic, the tour was first introduced in 1987 to enhance the airport’s attractiveness as a transfer hub and to entice transit and transfer passengers to visit Singapore as a holiday destination.

In 2019, over 80,000 passengers booked the free Singapore Tour. The top markets were India, Australia and Indonesia, with Indian and Australian travellers making up more than one-third of the participants.

New tour in Eastern Singapore

The Changi Precinct Tour is a new itinerary that will bring participants to the eastern part of Singapore to visit local community spaces, such as the Tampines heartland, and to admire the rustic charms of Changi Village and Changi Beach. It offers a glimpse into how local residents live. It tells the tale of Singapore’s history on this part of the island, away from the usual hustle and bustle of Singapore’s city centre.

Three refreshed itineraries

At the Jewel Tour and visiting popular attractions like the Shiseido Forest Valley and the HSBC Rain Vortex, participants can discover more about Singapore’s food heritage through local brands such as Bee Cheng Hiang and Tong Garden and sample local snacks at the same time. Another new component of the tour is a free guided walkthrough of a digital attraction – Changi Experience Studio – for participants to experience some of its airport-themed games and interactive exhibits.

New pit stops in the City Sights Tour include the Civic District, where travellers will be introduced to Singapore’s urban development through visits to various national monuments, including the National Gallery Singapore, Anderson Bridge and The Padang. The bus route will also pass through the new Marina Bay Financial District en route to Gardens by the Bay.

The Heritage Tour, available from June, will feature places of interest, such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, Arab Street and Haji Lane, for participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of Singapore’s unique and diverse multi-cultural heritage.

The refreshed itineraries also highlight sustainability features at some of the locations featured in the tours to give participants an overview of Singapore’s sustainability efforts. These include the Eco Community Garden at the rooftop of Our Tampines Hub (as part of the Changi Precinct Tour), environmental sustainability initiatives implemented at Gardens by the Bay (as part of the City Sights Tour) and Jewel (as part of the Jewel Tour). CAG, SIA, and STB have appointed Monster Day Tours to run the Free Singapore Tour.

Transit and transfer passengers who wish to join the Free Singapore Tour must have a layover period of at least 5.5 hours but less than 24 hours. Participants must have a valid entry visa for Singapore to participate in the tours.

Emulating a quintessential beach house, the Coral Reef Penthouse Suite is a two-bedroom pied-à-terre within the resort, which is rooted in Hawaiian culture and encapsulates the elegance of oceanfront living. Designed with calming coastal hues and premium finishes, the penthouse suite epitomises barefoot luxury through a sleek and functional indoor/outdoor design – providing nearly 4,000 square feet (372 sqm) of living space, including the largest oceanfront patio in Waikiki.

Accessed via private elevator, the suite sleeps up to eight adults, with three artfully appointed primary bedrooms and three oversized bathrooms, plus a sleeper sofa. The third bedroom and bathroom are located on the suite’s first floor, ideal for multi-generational travellers and families seeking additional space.

The light-filled kitchen and living room are chic and comfortable, with a full-sized refrigerator to hold beverages and bites alongside a white-washed wooden dining table for memorable meals. The outdoor lanai — patio — is furnished with plush chaise lounges, day beds and a dining table – offering impeccable views of Diamond Head and the world-famous Waikiki surf and its surfers.

“The Coral Reef Penthouse name is a tribute to Outrigger’s long-standing commitment to preserving, protecting and planting coral reefs through our global conservation programme – The Outrigger Zone (OZONE); for each direct booking at this premium penthouse, a portion of the proceeds will go toward coral reef conservation,” said Sean Dee, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer.

The privacy and splendour of the Coral Reef Penthouse Suite make the venue ideal for travellers seeking spacious accommodation on the water in Waikiki that’s both set apart from other rooms while still being connected to the resort amenities and offerings. Some of the first to enjoy a preview stay at the penthouse include celebrity chefs such as Marcel Vigneron to professional athletes like surf star Billy Kemper and Japanese tennis sensation Kei Nishikori.

A stay at the Coral Reef Penthouse Suite includes entry to the resort’s exclusive Voyager 47 Club Lounge; the name honours the navigators who voyaged the unknown oceans via sailing canoe, and 47 is a reference to Outrigger Hospitality Group’s founding in 1947 – 75 years ago. Rainforest World Music Festival is back

KUCHING 5 APRIL 2023: The iconic Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2023 will make a ‘physical’ comeback from 23 to 25 June at Sarawak Cultural Village, Kuching.

The annual festival organised by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) will see musicians and fans of world music congregating, sharing and experiencing different sounds.

The 26th RWMF will be Sarawak’s unforgettable ‘ambassador’, delivering sounds of Sarawak to the ears and hearts of music lovers worldwide.

The festival’s line-up will feature 199 musicians from 12 countries across more than three continents to perform a diverse range of music genres, including Grammy Awards winner Gipsy Kings from France of such hits as ‘Djobi Djoba’ and ‘Bamboleo’ set to enthral visitors with their pop-oriented music, distantly derived from traditional flamenco and rumba genres.

Other international performers include ‘Big Mountain’ from Jamaica, ‘Safi Theatre’ from Tanzania, ‘Rastak’ from Iran, ‘Fasylive’ from Maldives, ‘Afriquoi’ from the UK, ‘Chatusram’ from India, ‘Rizal Hadi & Folk’ from Indonesia and ‘Thai Fusions Sound Band’ from Thailand. The line-up will also include performers from Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Speaking at the launch of the 26th RWMF, Sarawak’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, YB Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah explained: “While the international performers are undoubtedly the highlight of the event, we must also acknowledge the exceptional local performers and bands who have thrived as a result of RWMF over the years. They are a testament to the transformative power of music and culture in positively impacting our communities.”

The Minister also called for support of local musical talents who will perform at RWMF2023, including Zee Avi, Suk Binie, APU, Nadir, Steve Thornton Band, Sada Borneo, Tuku Kame, Nading Rhapsody, Geng Wak Long, Buloh Berkocak, At Adau, Meruked and Orang Orang Drum.

Sharing the theme of this year’s festival, ‘REFLECTIONS’, the Minister invited the audience to reflect on the humble beginnings of RWMF, with merely 300 spectators for its first-ever concert back in 1998. The event has now grown to be Sarawak’s ‘Star Festival’ and internationally renowned platform, recognised as one of the 25 best International Festivals, placing Sarawak in a position to be the

Targeting more than 20,000 visitors for RWMF 2023, Sharzede added that the RWMF’s international recognition had expanded from an acclaimed world music platform to being acknowledged as Sarawak’s keystone festival that strongly advocates Responsible Tourism in its quest to become one of the world’s most sustainable, eco-friendly festivals.

STB CEO Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor shared: “Reflecting on the course of events 26 years ago, I am glad that STB had undertaken the task and am proud to witness and be part of the growth of RWMF – from its humble beginnings to being recognised as a music festival of international stature. We look forward to reflecting on the next 25 years as we move towards making the RWMF a platform for Sarawak to push on sustainability and ecotourism for the next generation of music lovers.”

In previous editions, Sarawak had taken proactive measures towards creating and implementing a sustainable, eco-friendly festival. That continues as the state’s tourism players and local communities embarked on activities which included banning single-use plastics, encouraging upcycling of used materials, exploring innovative solutions to waste management and even providing shuttle buses to ferry festival-goers to alleviate carbon emission, energy conservation and environmental education, encouraging participation in greening initiatives – all towards making Responsible Tourism the ‘norm’.

STB invites visitors from Malaysia and worldwide to RWMF for a holistic experience and emotion of the festival, which promises harmony, diversity, and culture connected by music and dance. Visitors will experience various emotions in their purest and most authentic form – unforgettable, wild, tribal, cultural, and authentic expressions unique to Sarawak.

Ticket sales will open on 15 April 2023.

For further information, visit the festival’s official website www.rwmf.net.

About Rainforest World Music Festival Starting with only a few hundred people in the audience in 1998, the event has grown into an internationally recognised music festival, receiving awards among them as one of the Top 25 Best International Festivals awarded by Songlines Magazine for six consecutive years (2010 to 2015). The festival features various performances, from traditional music to world fusion and contemporary world music.

Cathay Pacific sets sustainable goals

HONG KONG, 5 April 2023: Cathay Pacific strives for leadership and embraces collaboration as it takes significant steps towards achieving its sustainability goals outlined in its 2022 Sustainable Development Report released last week.

The report titled “Greener Together” reflects Cathay Pacific’s belief that driving progress towards a sustainable future requires strong partnerships and collective action.

Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam stated: “As we enter an exciting new phase of rebuilding Cathay Pacific for Hong Kong, one of our key development areas is becoming a leader in sustainability. This means working with many stakeholders, partners and corporate customers to reconnect Hong Kong to the world sustainably. The title of this year’s report, ‘Greener Together’, reflects our determination to foster stronger partnerships to help drive the sustainable development agenda and build a more sustainable future for our customers, people, and communities.

“Despite the very difficult start to the year, 2022 saw several important milestones achieved in our sustainability journey. These involved yet more important steps towards developing the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supply chain, reducing single-use plastics in our operations and continuing to advance the agenda of wellness and diversity for our people. Moving people forward is our business. As we look ahead to the future, we are excited to continue contributing to important projects and being a positive driving force towards making aviation more sustainable.”

Key highlights from the 2022 report

• Driving progress towards decarbonisation: As part of efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and using SAF for 10% of its total fuel consumption by 2030, the group launched Asia’s first major Corporate SAF Programme. Garnering support from eight launch customers, the programme sends a strong signal to the SAF supply chain that there is firm interest in the region.

• Extending the carbon offset programme: First launched in 2007, Cathay Pacific’s long-standing voluntary carbon offset programme, Fly Greener, has now been extended to cargo operations – an essential part of our business. This provides our customers with a more sustainable cargo solution.

• Surpassing the target to cut single-use plastics: The airline has reached a 56% reduction of single-use plastics used per-passenger level compared to the 2018 baseline and is now launching a new target.

• Driving Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) across operations: A new and more ambitious goal is to hire not more than 65% of the same gender in senior positions by 2025. As of April 2023, the group will have a 50/50 gender split in its executive committee. It also became the first commercial airline listed on the 2023 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index.

• Promoting and enabling wellness: Covid-19 has impacted people’s well-being. The airline group introduced a week-long Mental Health and Wellbeing Festival with various activities and workshops to promote wellness and support our people.

Banyan Tree pipeline plans

SINGAPORE, 5 April 2023: Banyan Tree Group closed 2022 with the addition of eight newly built or converted hotels putting the Singapore-based group on track to double its footprint by 2025 across 23 countries.

In a review of its 2022 performance, the group said it closed the 2022 fiscal year with 63 properties across its global portfolio of 10 hospitality brands.

Among the five new brands launched last year, Garrya is poised to overtake the Banyan Tree as the group’s fastest-growing brand.

“At the end of 2021, we stated an ambitious goal to double our global footprint, a target that we are well on track to achieving thanks to a combination of favourable market conditions amid resurgent tourism and our strong portfolio of brands that match consumer trends in destinations as diverse as China and Spain,” said Banyan Tree Group president and chief executive officer Eddy See. “Our development pipeline to 2025 will deliver 50 new hotel openings or conversions, bringing the Group’s global portfolio to 113 hotels.”

Banyan Tree

The group’s flagship Banyan Tree brand, which currently constitutes 50% of the group’s portfolio, debuted in Saudi Arabia by opening a luxury resort in the ancient oasis city of AlUla.

In the next three years, the brand will add 12 more properties, including resorts in China. The expansion will continue in Quzhou, Emeishan, Dongguan’s Songshan Lake, Zhuhai, Chongqing, Suzhou, Yangcheng Lake and Xianju.

Elsewhere the group will establish properties in Busan, South Korea; Manila Bay in the Philippines; Tuwaiq in Saudi Arabia; and in Singapore, where an eco-friendly Banyan Tree will open as part of Mandai Wildlife Reserve, marking the Group’s Singapore debut.

Meanwhile, in Japan, a hilltop urban resort Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, is set to become the first and only hotel in Kyoto city to have a Noh stage.

Banyan Tree Veya

The end of 2023 will see the group’s wellness-centric brand Banyan Tree Veya plant a flag in the hills of Baja California just 90 minutes from the US border with the opening of Banyan Tree Veya Valle de Guadalupe Resort, Spa and Winery – the group’s fourth property in Mexico. After the triumphant opening of Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape resort that brought a no-walls, no-floors concept to Bali’s heartland, the second Banyan Tree Escape is set to arrive in Lampung on the Indonesian island of Sumatra within the next two years.

Angsana

The Angsana lifestyle brand will add three resorts in Vietnam in Ho Tram and Quan Lan (opening in 2023), followed by the recently signed resort in Mui Dinh.

In China, Angsana Chengdu welcomed its first guests in February 2023, and properties in Quzhou, Suzhou, Zhoushan and Foshan are set to open by 2025. Angsana resorts in Siem Reap, Cambodia and Anping, Taiwan, are also in the development pipeline to 2025. In Europe, Angsana will make Spain debut in 2026 with the arrival of Angsana Real de la Quinta Benahavis-Marbella, located in an exclusive residential community and offering a combination of hotel and residential long-term rentals and ownership.

Cassia

The extended-stay brand Cassia first brought its laid-back aesthetic and community vibes to Phuket, Thailand and Bintan, Indonesia. Four more long-stay Cassia properties are in the pipeline: in the tourist hub of Sokcho and Saekdal beach in South Korea; two in Bangkok, Thailand; and one in Hokkaido, Japan.

Dhawa

Dhawa just made a fresh debut in the Maldives with a conversion of a popular Angsana resort to Dhawa Ihuru, followed by Dhawa Xi’An Chanba’s & Dhawa Jinan Daming Lake’s arrival in China in early 2023. Next, the brand is gearing up to grow its Asia footprint with the opening of Dhawa Ho Tram in Vietnam and Beihai Weizhou Island hotels in China.

Homm

With its newly launched brand Homm offering the comforts of home in far-flung destinations, the group has announced the opening of Homm Saranam Baturiti in Bali in April 2023 and Homm Tu Le in Vietnam’s Yen Bai Province in 2024.

Garrya

Inspired by Asian sensibilities and natural elements, Garrya launched hotel openings in China, Japan and Thailand last year. The fast-growing brand is now set to open in Indonesia with a newly built property in Yogyakarta; four resorts in Vietnam, including Mu Cang Chai, Da Nang, Hoi An and Hoa Binh; and two in China – Xianju and Yangcheng Lake, all by 2025.

About Banyan Tree Group
