Sabah presents connectivity message

KOTA KINABALU, 21 February 2023: Sabah is solidifying its status as an essential transportation hub in Southeast Asia through ongoing destination marketing campaigns to drive the expansion of direct air connectivity.

Currently, Sabah’s international entry points are via Singapore, Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei Darussalam), Taipei, Hong Kong, Narita (Japan), Incheon (South Korea), Busan (South Korea), Manila (Philippines), and Bangkok (Thailand).

Airlines that provide direct routes between Sabah and these nine overseas destinations with a frequency of 72** flights per week include Air Asia, Scoot, Royal Brunei, Malaysia Airlines, Jeju Air, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Cebu Pacific.

Sabah’s advantageous location in the BIMP-EAGA region, combined with the coming of Nusantara, makes it imperative that the state take steps to ensure it is well-prepared and can encourage airlines to develop more direct routes.

With this goal in mind, the Sabah Tourism Board participated in Route Asia 2023 event in Chiang Mai, Thailand, last week to expand its connections within the aviation sector and with other tourism-related agencies.

STB chief executive officer, Noredah Othman, said that increasing air connectivity is one of Sabah’s top priorities and a key enabler for the continued growth of the state tourism industry, given that more than 90% Sabah’s visitors arrive by air.

“We are committed to the industry. Attending Routes Asia enabled us to engage in key conversations with senior decision-makers from the region’s airlines to rebuild robust international air connectivity into Sabah.

“We want to boost tourism growth by fostering new business relationships while strengthening old ones. Route Asia allowed us to gain exclusive insight into the aviation sector in the new post-pandemic era,” she said.

To better serve tourists and business visitors, Route Asia presented Sabah with the chance to promote its attractions, tourism offerings, and infrastructure to a diverse audience of aviation and travel industry experts.

These initiatives could lead to Sabah establishing new connections. The most recent was the direct route from Busan, South Korea, operated by Jin Air since December 2022.

Additionally, the state is looking at resuming direct flights with China following the recent border opening.

“While Sabah Tourism is working towards encouraging flight growth, we are also tripling our efforts to make Sabah a more visible destination. This year alone, we have carried out promotional efforts in Europe and the Scandinavian regions,” the STB CEO explained.

“As a business, we understand the value of targeting tourists from all over the world, including these areas. We intend to develop permanent ties with travel agents so they may inform their fellow residents or tourists about Sabah and the available direct flights if they travel to any destination that already has an established link with Sabah.”

In addition to international flights, Sabah is also well connected by domestic flights from Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Kota Bharu, Labuan, Penang, and Sarawak on Malaysia Airlines, MASWings, Air Asia, Batik Air, MyAirlines, and Firefly.

Sabah recorded 1,511,163 tourist visitors and MYR2.73 billion in tourism receipts between January and November 2022. There were 1,300,729 domestic arrivals and 210,434 overseas arrivals.

SailGP has launched a women’s pathway to create an inclusive sporting championship with gender equity at its heart – where the best athletes have equal opportunity to compete on the F50.’ Emirates Group has also recently signed the UAE Gender Balance Council pledge, committing to increase the representation of women in leadership roles to 30% by 2025.

Supporting sailing since 2004

Emirates has been a staunch supporter of sailing, with its first sponsorship tracing back to 2004 as the naming sponsor of Emirates Team New Zealand.

The global sailing racing calendar will see the Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team compete in the remaining races in Season 3 SailGP, with the iconic Emirates branded F50 boats featured in Sydney, Christchurch, and during the grand finale in San Francisco on 6 and 7 May 2023. The airline will also continue to support the team for the next three seasons of the racing calendar.

Travel to Hong Kong bounces back

SINGAPORE, 21 February 2023: A news report from China.org.cn claims normal travel trends have resumed between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the mainland.

According to the report, residents in Guangdong province are once more heading to Hong Kong for school or work and returning to Guangdong the same night. It revived what was the daily routine of thousands of people until the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted travel.

On 6 February, normal travels between Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Chinese mainland resumed, revitalising the “one-hour living circle” in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

Within one week, Hong Kong monitored a consistent climb in arrivals and departures, while tourists are also making a comeback.

“This is good news for Hong Kong. Tourism is one of the pillar industries of Hong Kong. The return of tourists will spur the recovery of the city’s dining, hotel and retail businesses, further catalysing the development of exhibition, transportation and trading,” said the China.org.cn report

Following the reopening of economic and trade exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, Guangdong province hosted an investment and trade policy promotion conference in Hong Kong on 8 February, attended by 500 international organisations and businesses based in Guangdong. Participants travelled from Zhejiang, Yunnan and Nanjing provinces to attend the conference.

The Chinese mainland is Hong Kong’s largest export market. But due to the pandemic, Hong Kong’s import and export activity decreased over the past three years. Along with the gradual resumption of goods transportation between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, the city’s export volume will also increase, helping Hong Kong’s economy get back on track.

From a long-term view, financial services and technological innovation are the key drivers of Hong Kong’s future economic recovery. The mainland’s economic development, a greater opening up, and the building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will provide a broader market for Hong Kong’s financial services and technological innovation industries.

The cross-boundary interconnection of financial data throughout the Greater Bay Area and the cross-boundary payment of Chinese yuan will, in turn, consolidate and revive Hong Kong’s position as an international finance hub.

As recovery plans emerged in late 2022, the Hong Kong SAR government promulgated the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint to enrich I&T talent resources and develop an “international talent hub”.

Last week China’s National Immigration Administration moved the talent hub project forward by introducing a new policy effective 20 February that issues endorsements for talents travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau SAR to residents of mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area.

Friendly faces are welcome in Russia

SINGAPORE, 21 February 2023: Russia plans to revive visa-free travel but only for citizens from a yet-to-be-approved list of friendly nations.

Last week Moscow Times reported visa-free travel was once more in the pipeline for reintroduction for citizens of “up to 11 nations” identified as friendly states.

Russia introduced a list of around 48 “unfriendly nations back in March 2022 that includes most western countries plus Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan in Asia. In Asia, India is identified as one of Russia’s stalwart five “friends”, with the others being Belarus, China, Kazakhstan and Syria.

Moscow Times’ 15 February report quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, saying that in addition to visa-free travel for citizens of up to 11 states, easier visa rules would apply for citizens of some six others, including India and Indonesia,

Moscow Times quoted Lavrov saying Russia would restart its e-visa programme, first launched in 2020 but then almost immediately suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The e-visa programme will be relaunched in an abbreviated format but will exclude citizens from most Western countries.

The Russian government is expected to announce the e-visa programme restart date by 1 June, probably costing USD50, valid for 60 days for a stay of up to 16 days.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s visitor arrivals have dropped by 96%, mainly due to international sanctions.

India is one of Russia’s top five “friends”, with the others being Belarus, China, Kazakhstan and Syria.

According to a Times of India report on 19 February, Russia’s e-visa programme will be reactivated for citizens from  70 countries.
