KOTA KINABALU, 12 January 2022: Sabah, the land below the wind is crowned by the highest mountain in Malaysia, surrounded by world class dive sites, and boasts a diverse array of plant and animal species with more yet to be discovered. Sabah is indeed a utopia for nature lovers and adventure seekers, perhaps one of Sabah’s Signature Attractions will be part of your 2022 bucket list!

Part of the signature attractions include Kinabalu Park, home to the majestic Mount Kinabalu (elevation of 13,435 feet/4,095 m). The park is also Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. People from all over the world would travel here just to scale its peak.

To observe Sabah’s wildlife in their natural habitat, one must visit the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary where the mighty Kinabatagan river is situated. On a river cruise you will have a chance of spotting Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, Borneo Pygmy Elephants and all eight hornbill species that can be found in Borneo.

Nature explorers should also visit the Maliau Basin, also dubbed as Sabah’s Lost World, as it is an excellent site for jungle trekking and bird watching. It contains an unusual assemblage of 12 forest types. The highlight of the adventure is to trek the majestic 7 tiers of Maliau Falls.

Considered as one of the world’s most complex ecosystems and classified as Class 1 (Protection) Forest Reserve under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968, Danum Valley Conservation Area serves as a natural home for the unimaginable number of plants and wildlife species including the Sunda Clouded Leopard. Being remotely located from human habitation makes this place a naturalists’ paradise.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, situated within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, have successfully saved and rehabilitated orphaned orangutan babies back into the wild. Today around 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve. The centre allows visitors to learn about the rehabilitation process and observe the orangutans at a safe distance.

For the divers, the jewel shaped island Sipadan, located offshore Semporna has been cited as one of the top dive sites in the world. It has been highly sought after by divers for its array of possible sightings and how its natural treasures still remain untouched after many years.

Also located in Semporna is Bohey Dulang which was formed from remnants of volcanic activity. It is the second-largest island amongst the Tun Sakaran Marine Park Islands. This island should also be included in a hiker’s bucket list as reaching the peak rewards you with an uninterrupted panoramic view of the island.

Besides Sabah’s Signature Attractions, the state is also proud to present its Community-based tourism or CBT for short. It is an initiative to promote sustainability and improve the livelihood of the community in an area, emphasizing on the development and involvement of the community in developing and managing their own tourism destination and products.

The CBT programs have received 2 international recognitions. The 1st was in 2019 when Kadamaian received the ASEAN Community Based Tourism Standard 2019-2021, at the ASEAN Tourism Ministers ’Conference 2019 international event in Hanoi, Vietnam. And the recent one was in Dec 2021 when Kampung Batu Puteh, a Community Based Tourism by Batu Puteh Community Tourism Co-operative (KOPEL) in Kinabatangan has been recognized as the Best Tourism Villages by United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Not only is Sabah rich in nature, but also Borneo Malaysia is known for being culturally diverse. An estimate of 42 ethnic groups with over 200 sub-ethnic groups with the number of languages and dialects going over eighty, all these different groups live together and form a homogenous community, where they are still retaining their own culture, custom, tradition, art, and festivals.

Is the privacy of hotel reviewers protected?

CHIANG RAI, 11 January 2022: Most hoteliers shake off a negative review like water off a duck’s back, but just a few explode and threaten the reviewer with a fate worse than death for ruffling the hotel owner’s feathers.

(Additional information on TTR Weekly’s request for a response from Agoda added 12 January 2022. Agoda responded on 18 January. See the latest updated report with Agoda’s response below.)

The latest example of this silly behaviour saw a Thai hotel (located in Khao Yai 150 km northeast of Bangkok) lose its cool, last week, over a not so favourable review. It is likely to raise alarm bells for reviewers who can’t resist the temptation to pen a few home truths about the hotels they stay in when visiting Thailand.

Photo: https://websitetipsandtutorials.com.

At first, the hotel replied to the offending review posted on Agoda.com  with a standard thank you and we are endeavouring to improve the shortcomings mentioned. That was until someone higher up the hotel totem pole read it. They immediately demanded that the author remove the offending review from the Agoda.com booking site. To strengthen the argument, they also threatened the Thai reviewer with a THB3 million claim for damages and THB 50,000 for every day the review remained visible to cover the estimated revenue losses. Plus, they rolled out the standard demand ordering the reviewer to pay for apology advertisements in five Thai language newspapers for five days in a row if the reviewer wanted to avoid a painful and expensive day in court.

It’s not the first time a Thai hotel has gone on the attack and threatened a reviewer for defamation and loss of business in the land’s criminal and civil courts. In 2020 a hotel on Chang Island had the reviewer arrested for posting an offending piece on Tripadvisor. The foreign resident in Thailand who happened to be a teacher settled, but it made Tripadvisor scribes think carefully about the risks of posting an honest review about their hotel stay.

But this time around, we have to ask how did the hotel actually identify the reviewer and obtain their address and email to file their threat of legal action?

The reviewer apparently told her lawyer she had not requested Agoda.com to remove the post. Then who ordered and authorised the removal of the offending post on the booking website?

Of course, hotels should take criticism firmly on the chin and learn from the experience to rebuild their star rating on a booking site. To do otherwise makes a mountain out of a molehill that only fuels media attention and drives more readers to the offending review.

But the spat that erupted in local media leaves questions about protecting a reviewer’s privacy. Agoda.com invariably hides a reviewer’s identity and contact information. Therefore, we have to ask how the hotel could identify the author to serve notice demanding an apology and financial compensation?

Agoda and other review sites may not be entirely off the hook. In defamation cases,  both the author and the publisher are often on the firing line when demands reach a court. In this latest spat, did the hotel opt to target the small fry author rather than file a complaint with the mega online channel that published the offending review? Whatever, Agoda took it down, and we asked the global booking channel if they could clarify how it will protect the privacy of its reviewers going forward. Could clarification be in the mail?

12 January 2022 update:

TTR Weekly reached out to Agoda.com for a response and received confirmation that they had received our questions regarding the privacy and protection of reviewers.

18 January 2022 update:

Agoda responded with a clarification on its reviewer rules and procedures. See follow-up report.

Sabah brings back ultra trail marathon

KOTA KINABALU, 11 January 2022: The Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon (BUTM) is returning to rustic Kiulu after a year hiatus, with hopes of attracting 800 extreme marathon enthusiasts.

Supported by the Sabah Tourism Board, the event will see marathoners racing past Kiulu villages and through the forested terrain trails. It is set to take place from 19 to 20 March.

BUTM race director Claus Pedersen said about 400 people have signed up for the marathon so far, with 25 of them being foreigners.

“The last ultra-trail marathon took place in 2020, right before the movement control order was imposed. At that time, there were 1,600 local and international participants.

“Due to the Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) restriction, we are limiting this year’s event to 200 participants per category,” he said, adding there are four distance categories (100KM, 50KM, 30KM, and 9KM).

He said registered international participants are believed to be expatriates living in Malaysia, and they come from Australia, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Russia, Romania, Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore, among others.

Kiulu remains the venue of choice for BUTM due to its reputation as an eco-adventure destination and its proximity to the state capital of Sabah, said Pedersen.

Recently, the BUTM committee, led by Pedersen, met with Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai to brief him on the upcoming sporting event. Pedersen assured the meeting that strict SOPs would be put in place and that all participants would be subjected to a Covid-19 test to prevent infection.

Joniston, who is also the Assistant Minister of Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment, stated the BUTM is more than just a sporting event but also a major tourism draw.

“This is wonderful for Sabah and Kiulu in particular because the BUTM event allows participants to explore Sabah’s rural destinations while participating in outdoor sporting activities in the fresh air surrounded by rivers, green trees, and mountains.

“Kiulu is known for its commitment to community-based tourism. The villagers could use this opportunity to promote their places, homestays, and culture, allowing participants to stay longer and enjoy our rural destination.

“While we encourage Malaysians to visit Sabah, we also recognise expatriates as our prospective tourists while the international tourism border remains closed. Therefore, we must continue to promote potential events that will attract expatriates and pique their interest in Sabah,” he said.

BUTM 2022 registration is open until February, and the registration procedure can be found at https://www.borneoultra.com/butm/registration.

AirAsia Philippines has also established a Safety Plus 24/7 Team composed of different department leaders. Medical teams strengthen support and monitoring of the health and well-being of employees, including by distributing medication and vitamins to those who have contracted the virus.

Singapore launches Art Around the City

SINGAPORE, 10 January 2022: The National Arts Council (NAC) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) have partnered to launch Art Around The City, a series of visual art installations and programmes across key precincts in Gillman Barracks, Orchard Road, Little India and Chinatown.

Drawing on their history, culture, and landscape, the public art activations will add vibrancy to each iconic precinct, engage with the public, and spotlight Singapore-based artists and curators.

Gillman Barracks.

Art Around The City, which runs through to April this year, brings the identities of the four precincts to life. Each site-specific installation sits at the intersection of Art, culture and heritage, to resonate and connect with each precinct’s community.

At Gillman Barracks, The Forest Institute presents a large-scale architectural installation by artist Robert Zhao Ren Hui and architect-artist Randy Chan. A culmination of four years of research, it elaborates on how nature co-exists alongside urban life. Visitors will be able to sign up for special programmes that include morning nature walks with the artist.

Hyphen BB curates and showcases The Non-Season in a vibrant take-over of Design Orchard in Orchard Road that features a diverse range of artists presenting fun yet thoughtful installations and artworks. The artist list includes Howie Kim, Ee Shaun, Masuri Mazlan and others presenting mixed media artworks – within the store as well as window displays – inspired by the ecological and commercial histories of the Orchard Road precinct. The public can join various programmes by artists and retail collaborators featuring tours, exclusive merchandise, workshops, and performances.

In Little India and Chinatown, the public artworks will respond to the precincts’ unique culture and deep-rooted traditions. Singapore-based creative agency Texture Media invites the public to experience The Rangoli Movement, an installation incorporating the sounds and vibrant colours of Little India with master artist Vijaya Mohan.

At Kreta Ayer Square in Chinatown, The Gathering features Singapore artist Wong Lip Chin and curator John Tung recreating a teahouse set within a traditional Chinese garden that will serve as a gathering point for the public to take in tea and incense experiences.

Tay Tong, Director of Sector Development (Visual Arts) at NAC, said, “The series of art installations and activations at the key precincts enables Art to be present in the urban spaces where the public can experience Art in different and appealing ways. We hope that the public artworks will activate the imagination and encourage people to pay attention and perceive more deeply the environment that they occupy.”

STB director arts & cultural precincts Lim Shoo Ling said: “In line with our efforts to enhance Singapore’s destination attractiveness, STB continues to support a variety of experiences that contribute to Singapore’s leisure offerings and showcase our unique arts and cultural heritage. We hope that both locals and visitors will enjoy the line-up of unique art experiences at “Art Around The City” and take time out to explore and rediscover our precincts.”
